EMERGENCY MEDICAL ALERT DOGS

These service dogs are different from Emergency Medical Response Dogs. In most cases, the ability to sense an oncoming medical crisis is innate within the dog. This means that it is not necessarily a trained skill. These dogs can be trained to help with certain types of conditions and oncoming medical crisis communicate this to his or her handler.

Emergency medical alert service dogs are able to sense an oncoming medical crisis communicate this to his or her handler.

Response tasks may include:

  • Snuggling close or pawing at their handler to alert or aid in recovery from an event
  • Finding or alerting another person in nearby to a medical event
  • Carrying or bringing medication or other needed items to help support recovery
  • Hitting an “ALERT” button to signal for help

This means a pregnant dog never gives birth alone, which is important to ensure all puppies have the greatest chance of survival. And like when a human baby is born, it’s important to have capable medical help to make sure all the pups and mother are healthy.
